Beauty (n) - "the quality present in a thing or person that gives intense pleasure or deep satisfaction to the mind, whether arising from sensory manifestations, a meaningful design or pattern, or something else." (dictionary.com)
Art is about expressing yourself, so for me it is natural to do art that reflects my personality and the qualities I possess. That is why my art is pink. Pink is my favorite color, but more importantly is expresses my bubbly, girly personality and is the iconic color of femininity and beauty. The lace aspects in my work are meant to expose the soft graceful feel of being womanly and poised, combined with the bright colors of pinks and purples to exemplify the strong, bubbly side. By adding the layers of lace and spray paint I intend to exemplify the multitude of layers that each individual female possesses and that those layers are what add up to make each woman beautiful in her own individual way. To me, my artwork is purely an expression of myself and the many layers and perceptions that comprise a female.
Pretty. Appealing, beauteous, charming, cheerful, cute, dainty, To me, the most important thing about the art I make is that it is pretty. Beauty can be defined in a variety of ways, and it is most certainly in the eye of the beholder, but I want my work to fall under the general and basic category of "pretty." I want the viewer to look at it and have something along those lines immediately come to mind. That is a huge deal to me so that is generally the deciding factor in my color choice and subject matter. The use of spray paint allows of a variety of shades of pinks and purples, but also keeps them very crisp and true to their color. I find the process of manipulating photos on the computer then printing and cutting them out to make stencils, and using masking tape as a referse stencil, gives a really clean and precise look. All-together this process has evolved to work well for the style and symbolism of artwork I enjoy creating.
My work has been evolving and becoming more concise to a clear and centralized theme, but I am also working to try new things and develop new ideas for subject matter that remains pretty and efiminate, but perhaps less literal. In my most recent piece I've been experimenting with wax and it hasn't turned out as well as I hoped. I am going to keep exploring that realm and perhaps try different methods and types of wax while continuing to incorporate the spray paint and lace. It is challenging for me to step out of my comfort zone and stray away from the methods I have found to make the typical pretty pieces I have grown accustomed to. I think it is important though, for me to exceed my boundaries and experiment with new things that still allow me to make work I am proud of but also work that is growing and changing.
